Our Health Promotion team organised an HIV awareness and prevention event for the community of Umlazi which is where the majority of our clinics are situated. Our educational programme, funded in part by the Victor Daitz Information Gateway, drew a large crowd who were also attracted by the free mass HIV counselling and testing on offer. The programme was designed to address local problems surrounding HIV/ AIDS and was delivered in isiZulu.  Speakers from various organisations were invited to speak, with talks focused on spreading awareness of HIV, the importance of testing, as well as hope for the role of science in developing a vaccine and a cure. The Victor Daitz Chair in HIV and TB Research and HPP Director, Professor Thumbi Ndung'u, welcomed the public and spoke about the importance of engaging the community and collaborations in fighting the HIV epidemic. 70 people took advantage of the free counselling and testing facilities, 7 of whom tested positive for HIV.
